Our Ambitions for Yahoo! JAPAN
Since its online debut in April 1996, the Yahoo! JAPAN site has pioneered and fueled the advancement of the Internet industry in Japan by providing a comprehensive, ever-expanding array of innovative services to millions of users. Guided by our Users First philosophy, we have consistently offered secure, easy to use services that ensure a worry-free user experience. As a result of our success and corporate growth over the years, the development of new services has become an increasingly cumbersome and time-consuming process involving more layers of decision-making and approval. This is a major issue that we have been addressing. At the same time, taking into consideration the ongoing evolution of current Internet market trends we are dedicated to continually creating amazing new services capable of eliciting a “Wow!” of delighted astonishment from users. In order both to accelerate the pace of new service development and to ensure that all of our new services possess “Wow!” power, our new team of operating officers has formulated a visionary management strategy that lays out a set of guiding Yahoo! Values for all Yahoo Japan Group employees. The four Yahoo! Values, namely, Problem Solving, Ultimate Speed, Focus, and Freeform, are discussed below.
The world is awash with problems in need of solutions, from trivial questions such as what to have for dinner tonight to far-reaching social issues such as how to cope with Japan’s declining birth rate and quickly graying population. Leveraging the power of the Internet and related technologies, the Yahoo Japan Group aims to be a problem-solving engine by offering the means and the services that enable individual Internet users and society as a whole to solve a wide range of problems. Among our four Yahoo! Values, Problem Solving is positioned as the core value. While viewing specific tasks and projects from a Users First perspective, all of our employees are in addition enjoined to bear uppermost in mind the central importance of Problem Solving to all aspects of their work.
The Internet industry’s operating environment is in a constant state of flux, and the capacity to adapt quickly to change is a basic requirement for ongoing business success. To counteract the inevitable slowdown in business execution accompanying our rapid corporate growth in past years, the entire Yahoo Japan Group has been tasked with accelerating processes in order to regain the sense of urgency typically found in a newly formed venture company. In addition to newly authorizing individual service units to unilaterally make decisions, we have shortened the approval process for releasing new services to just two stages, from around eight under the previous management team. We are confident that these and other changes made to our organizational structure and business systems will facilitate Ultimate Speed in overall business execution. Of our four Yahoo! Values, Ultimate Speed truly animates employees, even to the extent that the phrase forms repeatedly on their lips, mantra-like, as if inciting them to execute tasks swiftly and with broad-stroked abandon as opposed to methodically and with chiseled details, lest a business opportunity be allowed to slip away in the meantime.
Maintaining a keen Focus is essential to business success. If we attempt to provide every possible service, the overall quality of our service offerings will suffer, as relatively insignificant services divert limited human resources, equipment, and funds away from more important services. Under its Smartphone First policy, the Yahoo Japan Group has prioritized the optimization and development of new services for smartphones. More generally, we are focusing our resources on services that users like the most and that contribute most significantly to consolidated earnings. As for underperforming services, we are either discontinuing them or shoring them up through partnerships with other companies. Mirroring management’s business approach, individual employees must accurately gauge their potential contribution to solving specific problems and prioritize and selectively focus on those tasks that will contribute most significantly to achieving solutions.
In order to create services possessing genuine “Wow!” power, we must maintain a corporate culture that encourages a Freeform approach to innovation while at the same time accepting setbacks and failures as inevitable features of the creative process. As the Internet industry continues to evolve in ways unimagined and at breakneck speed, we must meet unprecedented challenges in radically new and untried ways. If in tackling new challenges we initially fail, by repeating this process over and over again we cannot but eventually succeed. Boldly irreverent and defiant of convention in our Freeform approach to new service creation, each and every employee will remain true to the tradition of our eponymous Yahoo forebears of Swiftian literary fame.
By cultivating these Yahoo! Values throughout the Yahoo Japan Group, we aim to empower all employees to make decisions and take action within their respective business sections, thereby accelerating the pace at which we develop new services that facilitate more effective problem solving. To ensure widespread adoption of our Yahoo! Values, we have incorporated them into our personnel evaluation system and are using them also as important benchmarks in setting salaries.
Freshly motivated to accelerate our development of wildly innovative new services boasting “Wow!” power, the Yahoo Japan Group is more committed than ever to remaining the No. 1 problem-solving engine in the Japanese Internet market. In our diligent efforts to secure sustainable corporate growth while retaining the trust and confidence of all stakeholders, we humbly request your continued understanding and support.
